IMPORTANT NOTICE

The online distribution of OpenVMS and related product patches is being migrated to the HP ITRC (Information Technology Resource Center) patch distribution site. The new ITRC patch server will allow OpenVMS customers to take advantage of many enhanced features for patch searching and distribution.

Beginning August 1, 2003, OpenVMS and related Layered Product, publicly available patches will be available from the HP ITRC web site at

http://itrc.hp.com/service/patch/mainPage.do

The same patches will still be available from the existing patch server in Colorado Springs (http://www.support.compaq.com/patches/) through the end of October 2003, to give customers sufficient time to update their bookmarks and make the transition to the HP ITRC web site.

ECO kits will also be available by raw FTP from (ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/).

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR BOOKMARKS AND REGISTER ON THE NEW SITE NOW

Note: if you're having trouble connecting to the ITRC site, please delete any cookies for "itrc.hp.com" from your browser and try again. Report any difficulties with or suggestions to MrVMS

    ECO KIT SUMMARY:

    An ECO kit exists for MTDISMOUNT.EXE on OpenVMS VAX V5.0 through V6.2.
    This kit addresses the following problem:

      o A device mounted foreign may become inaccessible after a
         dismount or may appear to be allocated to a nonexistent
         process. The system must be rebooted to regain access to the
         device. CSCPAT_0253 corrects this problem in most cases.
         However, the problem may still occur on some systems after this
         patch kit has been installed.

         This kit provides a program called

              'CSCPAT_0245_USE_WITH_CAUTION_MTDISMOUNT.EXE'

         that will allow the user to deallocate a device allocated
         to a non-existent process.

         ************************************************************
         *                                                          *
         *                          CAUTION                         *
         *                                                          *
         * This image needs to be run from an account with CMKRNL *
         * and WORLD privilege and should be used with extreme *
         * caution. A system crash and reboot may occur if *
         * instructions are not followed carefully. *
         *                                                          *
         ************************************************************

    To run the image, the following steps must be performed:

      1. Ensure that the device is allocated to a process that no longer
         exists on the system by using the $SHOW DEVICE/FULL and $SHOW
         PROCESS commands. If the device is not allocated or it is
         allocated to an existing process, the program will exit with
         the error message:

              %SYSTEM-F-DEVNOTDISM, device not dismounted

      2. Run the CSCPAT_0245_USE_WITH_CAUTION_MTDISMOUNT.EXE image using
         the following command:

              $ RUN SYS$MANAGER:CSCPAT_0245_USE_WITH_CAUTION_MTDISMOUNT

    The program outputs the following message and prompts for the device
    name to be released:

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    MTDISMOUNT V02.02

         This program is provided by the DIGITAL Customer Support Center
         in conjunction with CSCPAT_0245. It must be used ONLY for its
         intended purpose - to recover from the symptom described in
         file SYS$HELP:CSCPAT_024501*.RELEASE_NOTES where a tape device
         becomes allocated to a nonexistent process. The user of this
         program must have CMKRNL and WORLD privilege. To obtain
         additional information, contact the Customer Support Center by
         calling (800)345-9000.

         Device Name:
    --------------------------------------------------------

      3. Verify that the device is no longer allocated using the DCL
         command 'SHOW DEVICE/FULL'. The device should no longer be
         allocated if the steps above were followed correctly.
