ECO KIT SUMMARY:

An ECO (patch) kit exists for the PPLRTL on OpenVMS VAX V5.5 through
V5.5-2. This kit addresses the following problems:

o Recent releases of OpenVMS VAX (V5.5 - V5.5-2) have demonstrated
poor semaphore performance characteristics. This redesign of
PPL$ RTL semaphores removes a number of potential bottlenecks
present in its predecessor and returns PPL$ RTL semaphore
performance to pre V5.5 behavior.

One error that may be a symptom of the semaphor problems is a
return status of PPL$_INSVIRMEM from PPL$DECREMENT_SEMAPHOR.
Other symptoms may include a process hang when on a multiprocess
system. This patch may fix other problems with PPL$ semaphore
routines.

The system/cluster does not need to be rebooted after this kit is
installed.


CAUTION:

The problems described in this article are restricted to versions
V5.5, V5.5-1 and V5.5-2 of PPLRTL.EXE. To determine which version of
PPLRTL.EXE is present on your system, use the following command:

$ ANALYZE/IMAGE SYS$LIBRARY:PPLRTL.EXE

The output produced by the above command will include the image
version in the Image Identification Information section:
