IMPORTANT NOTICE

The online distribution of OpenVMS and related product patches is being migrated to the HP ITRC (Information Technology Resource Center) patch distribution site. The new ITRC patch server will allow OpenVMS customers to take advantage of many enhanced features for patch searching and distribution.

Beginning August 1, 2003, OpenVMS and related Layered Product, publicly available patches will be available from the HP ITRC web site at

http://itrc.hp.com/service/patch/mainPage.do

The same patches will still be available from the existing patch server in Colorado Springs (http://www.support.compaq.com/patches/) through the end of October 2003, to give customers sufficient time to update their bookmarks and make the transition to the HP ITRC web site.

ECO kits will also be available by raw FTP from (ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/).

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR BOOKMARKS AND REGISTER ON THE NEW SITE NOW

Note: if you're having trouble connecting to the ITRC site, please delete any cookies for "itrc.hp.com" from your browser and try again. Report any difficulties with or suggestions to MrVMS

    ECO KIT SUMMARY:

    An ECO kit exists for the DEC 3000 System on OpenVMS AXP V1.0.
    This kit addresses the following problems:

      o On DEC 3000 systems, on-disk data corruption may occur under
         the following conditions:

         - A process is issuing multiple, asynchronous writes
            from user pages which are part of a global section;

         - Asynchronously to the write operations, the process
            incurs page faults which may invalidate pages that
            were referenced in the queue, but were not yet
            ready to be processed as I/O requests;

         - When the I/O requests get dequeued for processing,
            the DEC 3000 CPU specific code fails to detect
            that a user page mapping a page in the global
            section has become invalid. This failure will cause
            another random page to be written to disk.

         Note that OpenVMS paging semantics allows for a process page
         which is locked down for I/O to become invalid, as long as that
         process page maps a page of a global section.

         Typically, this failure is made evident by a process with a
         limited working set, issuing numerous asynchronous I/Os which
         involve global sections, and where in the act of issuing the
         I/Os, the process is sweeping memory (i.e., from one end of the
         global section to the other), incurring numerous page faults.
